Months

Learning the months of the year is as easy as counting from 1 to 12.

Month Kanji Hiragana Romaji
January 一月 いちがつ Ichi-gatsu
February  二月 にがつ Ni-gatsu
March 三月 さんがつ San-gatsu
April 四月 しがつ Shi-gatsu
May 五月 ごがつ Go-gatsu
June 六月 ろくがつ Roku-gatsu
July  七月 しちがつ Nana , Shichi-gatsu
August 八月 はちがつ Hachi-gatsu
September 九月 くがつ Ku-gatsu
October  十月 じゅうがつ Jyuu-gatsu
November 十一月 じゅういちがつ Jyuuichi-gatsu
December 十二月 じゅうにがつ Jyuuni-gatsu


Gatsu and getsu and tsuki all mean "month", but are used differently.

Gatsu
As you have just learned, gatsu is used to state the months of the year.
Getsu
Getsu is used as the general term for "month" as in "this month", "next month" etc. It is also used to express periods of time . For example, 3 months in Japanese is "Sanka getsu"　三ヶ月. Getsu also means moon. "Mangetsu" is full moon.
Tsuki
Tsuki is the common term for moon. It is used also to mean month. For example, "maitsuki" means "every month".

今月試験があります こんげつしけんがあります I have a test this month
また来月 またらいげつ See you next month
先月京都に行ってきた せんげつきょうとにいってきた Last month I went to Kyoto
何ヶ月間日本にいますか なんかげつかんにほんにいますか How many months are you in Japan for?
毎月ゴルフします まいつきゴルフします I play golf every month.
正月は自家に帰りますか しょうがつはじっかにかえりますか Are you going to your family home for the New Year?
もうそろそろ十二月になる もうそろそろじゅうにがつになる It will be December soon
ほら　見て　月がきれい ほら　みて　つきがきれい  Look. The moon looks beautiful
何月生まれですか なんがつうまれですか What month were you born in?
月々１０万円支払います つきづきじゅうまんえんしはらいます Ｉ pay 100,000 Yen each month.
